  1. Just spent a week on Anguilla with some friends. I could write a book, but I’ll spare you. Here are some highlights:

    Dinner at Picante
“Perfect” is the only way to describe it. I ordered the grilled prawn and chipotle burrito with mango aioli. Wow, incredible. I heard another guest exclaim, “These are the best fish tacos I’ve ever tasted.” They must have been. Her plate went back to the kitchen as clean as can be.

Lunch and Snorkeling at Junk’s Hole
Palm Grove and Junk’s Hole were in the plans before we ever stepped foot on the plane. Saturday would be the day.

We stopped by a few beaches on our way there. Jobsey Bay or Dropsey as some know it was incredible. Large limestone and coral formations lined the beach and a reef broke the surf creating a crystal clear lagoon.

We got back in the car and headed over to Nat’s Place (Palm Grove). We ordered some ribs, the lobster special, and a few rum punches, then made our way down to the beach for a quick dip. We got back just in time for our food and passed our plates around until they were spotless. After refreshing our drinks one last time, we headed back down to the beach.

I put on my snorkeling mask and fins and followed the long ribbon reef that ran down the left side of the ocean. Triggerfish, clown fish, and others were all making their presence known. A two-foot grouper tried to camouflage itself on the sea floor, but it couldn’t hide from me. I had been out there long enough, drifted a little too far from shore for my own comfort. On my way in, I stopped and explored two, medium-sized formations in the shallow water.

From Palm Grove we headed up to Windward Point Bay. We were hoping to end up at Captain’s Bay, but we got a little lost on one of the East End’s Dirt Roads. Can’t complain. It was beautiful, rocky, and rugged. We could see the blowhole about a mile in the distance. It would have been nice to take a closer look, but we couldn’t stay too long. Had to get ready for dinner at Koal Keel, our chickens were marinating.

    Moonsplash on Saturday Night
Arrived at Planet Dune just in time to catch the last few songs of Bankie’s set.

After a brief sound check, Inner Circle took the stage. Junior Jazz lead the “Bad Boys of Reggae” through a ripping set that included all their classics. Ian Lewis, Inner Circle’s bass player, was all over the stage. He was dancing up a storm while playing some of the sickest lines I’ve ever heard.

Before Inner Circle’s set drew to a close, Junior Jazz invited Bankie up to sing a song or two. It took a little time for him to climb down from his tree house, but he took the stage to thunderous applause. Halfway through the song his shirt was on the floor and he was head over heels in a headstand. I tried to capture it with my camera, but it happened too fast.

Sunday afternoon at Gwen’s Reggae Grill
After stopping by Shoal Bay East for some sun and snorkeling we walked up around the bend to Gwen’s Reggae Grill. Heard there’d be live music.

It was great. Hammocks were strung between palm trees, tables lined the beach, and a covered patio served as both a dance floor and stage. We danced a little, enjoyed a few refreshments, and eventually lost track of time. Those things happen in Anguilla.

A regular of Gwen’s Sunday afternoon jams asked that I not reveal his secret. Some are too good to keep. My apologies.
